Types of Contests

Must Fill

Must Fill contests will not run if the contest is not filled by the contest start time. This type of contest has an established prize pool and payouts; however, they will only be paid if the contest runs by being full at the contest start time. All entry fees will be refunded if the contest is not full at the contest start time.

Build Up

Build Up contests do not have a pre-defined total prize pool and payout amounts. The total prize pool and payouts increase with every new entry into the contest. The final total prize pool and payout amounts will be determined by the entry fee and total entries in the contest when it starts. This type of contest is guaranteed to run with the total prize pool and payouts at the contest start time. The more entrants the bigger the prize pool grows!

Guaranteed

Guaranteed contests have a set total prize pool and payout amounts. The established prizes will be paid out even if the contest does not reach the total possible entries. This type of contest is guaranteed to run with the set total prize pool and payout amounts.

Guaranteed+

A Guaranteed+ contest is a hybrid between a Guaranteed contest and a Build Up contest. Guaranteed+ contests have a minimum total prize pool and payout amounts set, but they can grow beyond that if the number of entries in the contest begins to exceed that threshold. When the number of entries exceeds the minimum total prize pool and payout amounts set, then the total prize pool and payouts will increase with every new entry into the contest. This type of contest is guaranteed to run with at least the minimum total prize pool and payout amounts. However, the more entrants the bigger the prize pool grows!

Lineups and Entry

Lineups are built using a Salary Cap format by reviewing and selecting the available Teams or Players listed in the Pool along with the Cost of each option in the Pool list on the left side of the screen to build a valid Lineup that fits within the Salary Cap and Lineup spots requirements in the Lineup list on the right side of the screen.

The Contest Pool will consist of either Teams or Players depending on the event.

Teams and Players

Contests with Players and their Team will have scoring accumulated based on both the outcomes of the Team such as a Win, and outcomes of the Player such as strikeouts (MLB), points scored (NBA), yards gained (NFL), or other scoring categories. Contests with Teams and Players can be for anywhere from a single day or weeks’ worth of games up to an entire season or playoffs (NFL, NBA, MLB), or tournament (March Madness).

Players

Contests with Players in the Pool will have scoring accumulate based on the outcome of the individual player such as strikeouts (MLB), points scored (NBA), or yards gained (NFL). Contests with Players would also include individual sports such as Tennis or Golf. Contests with Players can also be for anywhere from a single day or weeks’ worth of games up to an entire season, playoffs, or tournament.

Team/Player Costs

The Cost associated with each Team or Player in the Pool is set to provide a challenging and skill-based game. The Cost is determined based on historical statistical performance and projecting expectations for the Team/Player factoring in any matchups along with the scoring categories and point allocations set up for each specific Contest.

Add Teams/Players to Lineup

To add a Team/Player from the Pool to a Lineup, select the   icon next to the Team or Player in the Pool to move them into the Lineup grid on the right side of the screen. Teams/Players can also be found in the Pool by starting to type in the Search box.

Remove Teams/Players from Lineup

To remove a Team/Player from a Lineup back to the Pool, select the   icon next to the Team or Player in the Lineup to move them back into the Team/Player pool on the left side of the screen.

Salary Cap

When building your lineup make note of the Balance available which is displayed right above the Lineup grid. The Balance available will update as Teams/Players are added or removed from the Lineup. The Balance cannot go below zero when building the lineup and entering the Contest. The Salary Cap (Balance) for a contest can vary by contest.

Beyond the Salary Cap, contests can also have lineup restrictions or be open-ended.

Min/Max Lineup

Some Contests will have a specified Minimum or Maximum number of Lineup spots that are required to be met to enter the Contest. The Min and Max settings (if applicable) for a Contest will display just above the Lineup grid to the left of the Balance. Contests can have the Min/Max set to the same value to require a specific number of Teams/Players selected in the Lineup, or the Contest can have different Min/Max set to provide a range of valid Lineup spots available to successful enter a Contest.

Unlimited Lineup

Some Contests will not specify a Minimum or Maximum number of Lineup spots required. In these Contests, there will be no Min/Max values displayed above the Lineup grid. For Unlimited Lineup Contests, the entry can have any number of spots filled in the Lineup as long as it is still within the Salary Cap (Balance) for the Contest. This type of Contest invokes increased strategy possibilities.

Scoring Categories & Points

Be sure to carefully consider the specific scoring categories and points allocation when building a lineup as the scoring will vary between sports and even contests within a sport. The scoring for the Contest can be found by clicking on the Contest Rules & Prizes link and viewing the Scoring tab.

Enter Contest

After taking all of the Contest parameters into consideration and building a valid Lineup that stays within the budgeted Balance and any Min/Max Lineup settings, click on the Enter Contest button to submit the Lineup into the Contest. At this time the entry fee will be removed from the user Account Balance.

Click on the Export to Excel button to download a file with all of the current standings, points, winnings, lineups, and sum of ownership percentages for each entry.

Final Scoring Updates & Payouts

When a Contest is completed, the final scoring results are updated and validated to ensure they are accurate. Following this validation process, the standings and payouts are finalized. All winnings are distributed to each user’s SportsClash Account Balance. Contests that have completed final scoring and payout will be moved to the Completed filter on the My Entries page.

If there is a case where the official scorers issue a stat-correction after games have ended and our scoring validation process has completed, those changes that occur after a SportsClash contest has been finalized will not impact those finalized contest results. However, if a correction needs to be made after contests are finalized due to an issue with our final scoring and payout validation process, while rare, the validation process (including payment) may be reversed and redone correctly.

Basic Strategy

Contest Selection
  • Look for contests that are in a sport of interest to you where you have at least some general team and player knowledge.
  • Find contests for that sport with an entry fee that fits within your financial means (play responsibly).
  • Review the contest payout structure and size to see what fits your style and risk tolerance. Entering a contest that pays out half of the field offers a higher rate of winning but smaller payout. Entering a contest with a lot of entries that only pays the Top 10 or Winner Take All offers a bigger potential payout but has a lower chance to cash.
  • Find contests that you can enter in the maximum number of entries allowed. Whether it is a single-entry or a multi-entry contest you level the playing field if you can max enter the contest.
  • Watch for contest “overlay” which can occur in Guaranteed Prize Pool (GPP) contest types. An overlay is when a GPP contest prize money exceeds the total amount of entry fees collected. Look to enter GPP contests that have significantly fewer entries than the total entries allowed for the contest.
Lineup Building
  • Pay close attention to the scoring categories and points for each contest. SportsClash is different than most fantasy sites because many contests give points not only to individual player performance but also to their team performance. Even if a player misses a game you can still accumulated team points.
  • Watch lineup requirements as many of our contests allow unlimited roster spots as long as you fit within the Salary (Balance). This opens up a lot of flexibility and strategy when building lineups. Loading up a lineup with a bunch of cheap options could be a better strategy than only getting a couple high-priced options.
  • Use the contest size and payout structure to help determine how unique your lineup should be. In small contests or contests that pay out to half the field, a more conservative lineup construction with less risky players/teams could be better. However, in a large contest or contest that only pays the top few spots, a more unique lineup construction with riskier players/teams could move you up the standings to the top.
